What different types of
hair are available for rehairing?
1. Natural - Real hair
can be purchased from online retailers. Usually
naturally-colored, it sometimes is dyed in brighter or enhanced colors.
-
Human: Human
hair is extremely expensive, and can be purchased in a variety of
colors, lengths, and styles. The most available sources of human hair
are via wigs. Human hair is usually very delicate and fine.
-
Horsehair: Horsehair
is not commonly availalbe, and sometimes cruel methods are used to
obtain tails. I have only found one online company that sells humanely
harvested hair. Horehair usually comes in bundles and is available in
a very limited spectrum of colors, usually blondes, browns, and
white/silver. Occasionally dyed horsehair can be found. Horsehair
fibers are thick and somewhat coarse and cannot be styled.
2. Synthetic
- Synthetic hair
is factory-made plastic fibers that resemble human hair. However, synthetic
hair is not limited to natural colors; it can be found in every color of the
rainbow. It is easily brushable but does not always style
well.
- Nylon: Nylon fibers are lightweight,
soft, and shiny, and takes to styling very well.
- Saran: Saran fibers, though the feel thicker than nylon, are actually thinner. Saran hair lays limp and is easily combable, but is slightly waxy in feel and
cannot be cut to a short length easily, as it will becomedifficult to style
downwards. Saran hair takes to styling fairly poorly but is not as affected by high
heat as other fibers.
- Kanekelon: Kanekelon fibers are shiny, silky, and
stiffer than saran or nylon. It is most often used for straight hair. Kanekelon
fibers takes to styling moderately to poorly and will crimp or melt under high
heat settings; however, it can be worked with on low heat settings.
- Yaki: Yaki fibers are either
straight or crimped (more often the latter) and are lower quality than Toyokalon and Kanekelon. However, the fibers
are lighter in weight and fuller, which can create a unique look if not ironed straight. It that takes to styling moderately well but can melt under high heat
settings.
-
Toyokalon:
Toyokalon fibers are soft and straight, and
are higher quality than Yaki but less so than Kanekelon.
3. Other - Many unique sources of hair include G3 box handles, jump ropes, dollar
store wigs, yarn, embroidery floss, etc. The possibilities are endless!
4. Donor - Donor hair is not
a specific type of hair, but instead refers to hair that has been harvested from
another source. Such sources are usually toys, such as ponies, minature dolls (i.e. Barbies), larger baby dolls, trolls, etc.
What type of hair do My Little Ponies have?
All generations of ponies are given with nylon hair.
Where can I find information about rehairing ponies?
There
is a plethora of information about rehairing available on custom
websites and message boards (such as the Trading Post and Arena). Strawberry Fair's Rehairing Service also has a page dedicated to rehairing questions.
